The FPL season has officially begun, and it has FPL managers bursting with joy. The ability to tinker with your squad and attempt to crack the perfect lineup is a tantalizing challenge. One of the teams that seems to have flown under the radar is Arsenal. Perhaps because their leading point scorer from last season is now a costly 12 million pounds, or due to their somewhat difficult starting schedule. The reality is, Arsenal will score goals and they are always a strong defensive side with Wenger at the helm.
In my opinion, there are a few Arsenal players that would make a strong addition to any FPL squad, but it is impossible to ignore Alexis Sanchez (that is assuming that PSG or Man City don’t come in and sign the Chilean!). Yes, he is the most expensive midfielder, but there is a reason for that - he guarantees returns. Sanchez was involved in 35 goals last season - 24 he scored himself, 11 were assists.
Having had quite an on-off season last year, Mesut Ozil can probably be considered a differential in FPL. He is an assist wizard and, with a new striker to pair up with, he is likely to be providing FPL points.
It is hard to select a budget option amongst the Arsenal squad - they are either expensive or not playing. With that in mind, and considering the defensive strength of a Wenger squad, Nacho Monreal is a good budget pick. Priced at just £5.5m he is the cheapest defender likely to play most games and can even contribute the odd assist.
Defensively there are a few options that I would consider for FPL glory. Koscielny and Bellerin are both always on bonus points and get involved in the offensive game. Their new signing Kolasinac is also a very strong defender that I think will fit in very well with this team. He may be a good differential pick as not many know what he is capable of. Mustafi is another one to consider, he loves to hold a clean sheet and is a ferocious defender, another differential as not many pick him up for 5.5.The rumour mill is saying that Gibbs is going to be signed elsewhere so I would avoid putting him in your drafts for now.
After Sanchez, the second Arsenal attacker to consider is Arsenal's new signing Lacazette. The feisty Frenchmen has an eye for goals and dominated scoring for Lyon. He looks to be a strong addition to the squad and is sure to bulge the onion bag on multiple accounts. Arsenal's midfield is a bit of a gamble in my opinion. Ramsey is a fair price and can join in on some scoring fun, but is inconsistent. Xhaka seems to get as many red cards as goals, and the Ox is a pacey winger that never seems to have the proper final touch.
For me, Sanchez, Lacazette, Ozil, Koscielny and Bellerin are all viable options for Gameweek 1. It is worth noting that Arsenal do not have Champions League this year, this makes squad rotation and injury issues less of a concern. It will be interesting to see how Arsenal recover after a disappointing campaign last year. Will the boys step up and give Wenger something to celebrate in what surely is his last year? Or, will the team trade Sanchez and lack a talisman to lead them through the season? Either way, there are some strong FPL candidates wearing the Gunners jersey this year that you shouldn’t ignore.
