There is actually a lot to say about West Ham for the upcoming season. They have been one of the most active teams in the transfer window. Bilic seems to have channeled his inner Pep Guardiola, and is splashing his cash. Additionally, West Ham fans are the early contenders for the chant of the season.
After a fairly tepid and underwhelming 2016/17 Premier League season, I think it is fair to say that they have vastly improved their side. Frustration with injuries last season and their star man Payet saying "au revoir" and heading to France had them needing a revamp.
It is actually fairly difficult to predict who will be the Hammers star man in FPL terms. Their newest signing, known as The Little Pea, Chicharito has the potential to regain his goal scoring form. At a generous 7 pounds, he offers the position as your third striker. He is sure to score goals, although his numbers over the past few seasons do leave something to be desired. However, I would take a gamble and say that their other new signing Arnautovic is due up for a huge campaign. He shows pace and prowess on the ball, and has creativity that often results in goal scoring opportunities. Only selected by 1.5% of FPL managers thus far, I think people will be scrambling to get him into their early wildcard sides. It is worth noting, that in a way their star man could also be considered a differential.
Although he currently has a knock, Michael Antonio brought in 132 points in last season’s fantasy campaign. Selected by less than 1% of managers it is worth considering bringing him into your squad, assuming that he gets to full fitness over the next few weeks. After a tough fixture at Old Trafford to start the season, West ham have four generous fixtures where they will be keen to get their offence going.
West Ham have made some changes to their back line. They brought in an older and less formidable Joe Hart back from Italy. Joe has put down the “Italian for Dummies” book and will be happy to be in England again. He’s actually a reasonable choice for a keeper, but don’t start him against Man United in GW1. Zabaleta has joined the hammers from The Citizens, and will be a good FPL option if you’re looking for something a little different. Cresswell has shown that he can deliver good balls in from the wing and likes his opportunity from a spot kick, another decent Hammers option. The former Southampton centreback Fonte is also a reliable defender, although every time he’s on my squad he seems to concede a goal and pick up a yellow.
West Ham has some decent options in attack this season. The first I would consider as mentioned before is Arnautovic. However, some could argue that Lanzini is likely the better FPL option and for the same cost is the better buy. I just personally like the way that the former Stoke midfielder attacks the net. Antonio, Chicharito, Kouyate, and a healthy Carroll are all dangerous players that when the Hammers are playing well, can offer returns. It is going to prove to be an interesting season for West Ham. My guess is that they will push for a top 10 finish and potentially achieve that.
